England beyond Bath

ASE Summer School is punctuated with organised visits to London, Stonehenge, Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon, among other famous UK destinations

Whole Programme day trips

All ASE Summer School students are offered the chance to go on various day trips to some of the best-known sites in the South of England.

Destinations for our Whole Programme day trips include the famous stone circle at Stonehenge, Britain's greatest prehistoric archaeological monument; the Tor and ancient ruins at Glastonbury, reputed burial place of King Arthur; and a guided visit to the ancient university city of Oxford.

Residential weekend trips

Students on the Main and Education Summer Schools can look forward to an all-inclusive three-day weekend exploring the coastal paths and ruined castles of Dorset, the so-called Jurassic Coast.

Meanwhile, Theatre Summer School participants enjoy an overnight stay in Stratford-upon-Avon, birthplace of William Shakespeare, where we attend numerous productions by the Royal Shakespeare Company and attempt to meet the actors in the most famous of Stratford’s many pubs, ‘The Dirty Duck’.

Study Trips

All ASE Summer School Seminar Courses include a two-day study trip to a destination connected to the course content. Take a look at the course descriptions for details.

ASE reserves the right to cancel or change the content of course-specific study trips at short notice where necessary.

Independent travel

Bath is well located for a range of travel opportunities, so it's little surprise that many ASE students find time to travel independently around Britain.

Free weekends are an ideal time to explore the environs of Bath, and the country beyond. Many interesting villages and towns, and some lovely stretches of countryside, are easily accessible from the city on foot, by bicycle (which can be bought or hired locally), or by local buses and trains. Freshford and Bradford-on-Avon are just two such places.

Bath is also conveniently situated on a main railway line, with easy and frequent links to most parts of the national network. By train, for example, the city of Bristol can be reached in just 15 minutes, Cardiff (the capital of Wales) in an hour, central London in 90 minutes. Bath to Liverpool is a little over four hours.

“Being able to visit many of the places I'd learned about as a Political Science and English double major added a whole new facet to my educational experience.”
