Do you like food? Do you care about where it comes from?
This course is for students who want to explore a better future through the sustainable food movement in the United Kingdom, with a specific focus on Bath.
The global food system is failing in various ways: the degradation of natural resources, unsound marketing and labour practices of Big Food corporations, and food insecurity. Against this ugly backdrop, the sustainable food movement emerges as a formidable counterforce, uniting advocates for food justice at every level of production
The UK has become a stronghold for this movement, with Bath providing an ideal vantage point for encountering such ‘engaged sustainers’. Throughout the course, we will study how the sustainable food movement helps repair soil health, foster food sovereignty, and protect natural resources. Amidst all the anxiety, frustration, and polarisation of our era, this is a story of clear-headed grit.
Additionally, we will consume information and food from Bath. This includes visits to the Bath Organic Community Garden, the Bath Farmers Market, Bath City Farm, and local restaurants.
A residential study trip to the Cotswolds will explore sustainability at local farms.
